Android will power half of world’s smartphone market by 2012
According to market research firm Gartner, Android will power almost half of the world’s smartphone market by 2015. Android, Google’s mobile device operating system, will continue to see phenomenal growth in 2011, as it has done throughout last year, and finish with over 38% market share by the end of this year.

View your location history with Google Maps 5.3 update for Android
Google have just released Google Maps 5.3 update for Android that introduces a Google Location History dashboard, allows users to “check-in” at home, and adds the ability to specify custom “aspects” to places when rating them.

Microsoft discontinue Zune production
Microsoft will no longer release further iterations of Zune hardware, but will instead concentrate on integrating Zune software and functionality into other devices like the Xbox and those running Windows Phone 7.

Nintendo 3DS sells out within 24 hours of Japanese release
The Nintendo 3DS handheld gaming device has reportedly sold out within 24 hours of its release in Japan on February 26. According to Andriasang, more than 400,000 units were sold in the first day alone, effectively accounting for all available stock.

Google Nexus S coming to Ireland on March 1
According to Silicon Republic, the much-anticipated Google Nexus S will arrive on sale in Ireland this coming March 1. The Carphone Warehouse will reportedly stock the device, which will be available exclusively on the Vodafone network at first.

Both BBC iPlayer iPad and Android apps now live
The long anticipated BBC iPlayer iPad and Android apps have finally arrived earlier today. Response has so far been subdued, with most complaining that the apps don’t bring anything new to the table. Nevertheless, we checked out the iPad version and were quite impressed.

Mindshare Ireland have published an interesting infographic regarding smartphone usage in Ireland. The survey, conducted by Sponge It in November 2010, suggests that while over half of Irish consumers own a smartphone, many don’t use their device to its full potential.

Carphone Warehouse to stock Nexus S in Ireland “soon”
The Carphone Warehouse has announced that it will begin to sell Google’s coveted Nexus S phone in Ireland “soon”. The consumer electronics retailer made the announcement earlier this week on their Facebook page, with Vodafone Ireland reported to be an exclusive carrier.
