Foursquare have released version 2.0 of their popular location-based app on the Apple App Store, with Android and Blackberry updates “coming soon”. In a blog post announcing the update Foursquare made it clear that their goal was not just to create a simple check-in service, but “to build tools that would help people collect and share their real world experiences”. This release brings them closer to that goal. Below is a summary of the most important changes.
Separate sections for Tips and To-Dos
The Tips and the To-Dos sections have been split up. Foursquare say that by making the To-Do list easier to access its user’s will find it easier to keep track of all the places they want to experience.
More Tips and To-Dos features throughout the app
Tips and To-Dos now appear as one tap buttons, making them more accessible than buttons solely found in the navigation bar. To-Do reminders also appear as a blue ‘dog ear’ in your nearby places list. And whenever you check-in to a venue that is in your To-Do list you’ll be reminded of any To-Dos you may have saved for that venue.
Embeddable ‘Add to My foursquare’ buttons
Venue and review sites can now embed an ‘Add to My foursquare’ button on all their place pages. When clicked the button adds that particular venue for the Foursquare users To-Do list, effectively connecting what you find on the web to your Foursquare account. Foursquare describe this feature as being like Instapaper, “but for things to experience in the real world”.
