A recent job posting on Apple’s website has given rise to rumours that they may be working on not only Apple TV, but on television sets themselves – a rumour that first surfaced back in 2009.
The job listing on Apple’s website seeking an “AC/DC Power Supply Design Engineer” reads,
“The position primarily involves high-density offline power supply’s development for Apple’s next generation Macintosh platforms spanning from notebook computers, desktop computers, servers, standalone displays and TV.”
The interesting part of the quote comes in the last word in the sentence, where the ‘TV’ is clearly separated from normal Apple ‘standalone displays’. 9to5mac.com speculates,
“Apple separates ‘TV’ from ‘standalone displays’ making it clear these are actual televisions, not Apple’s regular LED displays.
“We are certainty speculating a little bit here, but we do feel this is very interesting either way.”
I’m sceptical as to whether Apple are indeed planning or are in the process of developing their own television sets. Apple are predominantly a mobile device company, so to me it doesn’t make sense to delve into an already crowded market such as television manufacturing?
If the rumours are true, expect the usual cutting edge Apple design and build quality, coupled with a hefty price tag.
