- Rent Top Gear episodes on Facebook for €1 BBC Worldwide, with help from social app maker Softwind Studio, has developed a Facebook video on-demand application that allows Facebook users to rent episodes of Top Gear and view these directly within the social network.
- BBC launch new TV-friendly iPlayer The BBC has today launched a new TV-friendly version of its video on demand iPlayer service which aims to improve user experience on this medium. The new version is only available to users in the UK initially on the PlayStation 3 console but later rolled out to a myriad of other devices and connected TVs.
- BBC iPlayer begins global launch with iPad app in 11 countries [includes images] BBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of the BBC, has launched its global iPlayer service this morning, Thursday, with an iPad only app now available in 11 European countries. Other areas such as Australia, Canada and the US are expected to follow later this year.
- International BBC News Android app launched BBC Worldwide has today launched the BBC News Android app to audiences internationally. An iOS version of this free app has already proved very popular since it launched in April 2010, with over three million downloads outside of the UK alone.
- BBC confirms reduced online services with revised service license Following on from budget cuts announced by the BBC at the start of this year regarding the national broadcaster’s online services, the BBC Trust has today published their revised service license for BBC Online. In January the BBC Trust announced a 25% budget reduction for BBC Online which would directly result in the loss of 360 jobs and the closure of over 400 BBC websites.
- Brian Cox presents Wonders of the Universe on the BBC Professor Brian Cox has returned to the BBC in a four part series titled Wonders of the Universe. Following on from Stargazing LIVE, a very successful three day solar exploration live broadcast event at the start of this year, Brian Cox returns to our screens in a new series and “reveals how the most fundamental scientific principles and laws explain not only the story of the universe, but the story of us all”.
- International BBC iPlayer could cost less than €7 per month Speaking at the Financial Times Digital Media Broadcasting Conference in London yesterday, the BBC’s Director General, Mark Thompson, revealed that the international version of the BBC iPlayer will definitely be available before the end of this year, and will likely cost less than $10, or approximately €7.
