iPhone users almost twice as likely as Android users to click on ads
According to a report by US-based mobile ad company Jumptap, iPhone users are almost twice as likely to click on ads than their Android counterparts. The average ad click-through rate (CTR) for Android users is just below the 0.52% industry average at 0.47%, while iPhone users are well above the average at 0.78%.

Mobile payment system Square can be hacked, claims researchers
Two researchers attending the Black Hat security conference yesterday in Las Vegas have demonstrated a simple hacking technique that could allow unscrupulous individuals to purchase items using the mobile payment system Square and stolen credit card data. With this technique, would-be hackers could use stolen credit card data to withdraw funds without the need to be in possession of the physical credit card.

Android continues market share surge in US
According to the latest comScore mobile subscribers market share report, Google’s Android platform has continued to make significant gains in US mobile market share, largely at the expense of RIM, the makers of BlackBerry mobile devices. Google remains the dominant player in the US mobile market with an average 34.7% of market share during the three months ending March 2011, up 6% on the three months ending December 2010.

Apple release iOS update to calm location privacy fears
Apple have released iOS 4.3.3, an update which it hopes will calm privacy fears following recent revelations by two security researchers that Apple iOS devices, including the iPhone and iPad with 3G, continuously store users’ location data to a “secret” file on their phone. While this may not be entirely true, Apple do cache or store Wi-Fi hotspot and cell tower location data that could potentially be used to trace where users have been.

Broadcast media check-in service IntoNow acquired by Yahoo!
Only twelve weeks after launch media check-in service IntoNow has been acquired by Yahoo! for a speculated $30 million dollars. The service exists as an iPhone application that provides real-time social experiences around broadcast media programming.

Apple continuously tracking and storing iPhone location data
The Apple iPhone and iPad with 3G connectivity constantly record and store location data to a file on the user’s device according to security researchers Pete Warden and Alasdair Allan. The two uncovered the existence of a “secret” file on iOS devices complete with legacy location data and will present their findings later today at Where 2.0 in San Francisco.

RTÉ Player coming to Android and iPhone later this year
RTÉ will release Android and iOS versions of their popular video-on-demand RTÉ Player service later this year. According to Silicon Republic, Aisling McCabe, head of platform development at RTÉ, confirmed RTÉ’s plans to release free mobile apps for the two platforms late last week.

Android will power half of world’s smartphone market by 2012
According to market research firm Gartner, Android will power almost half of the world’s smartphone market by 2015. Android, Google’s mobile device operating system, will continue to see phenomenal growth in 2011, as it has done throughout last year, and finish with over 38% market share by the end of this year.

Microsoft discontinue Zune production
Microsoft will no longer release further iterations of Zune hardware, but will instead concentrate on integrating Zune software and functionality into other devices like the Xbox and those running Windows Phone 7.
