First ever Irish Internet Expo will take place this October
Internet Expo, the first ever event of its kind in Ireland will take place in the RDS, Dublin this October 14th-15th. The two-day exhibition will help Irish and international businesses showcase their products and services to an anticipated 3,000 strong attendance.

Longest total lunar eclipse in 11 years will turn moon blood red tonight
The longest total lunar eclipse since 2000 will begin to occur this evening and last until midnight, providing stargazers a rare opportunity to catch this prolonged wonderful spectacle. The eclipse begins at 6.24pm (IST) this evening, although it will not be properly visible until sunset at around 9.55pm tonight, at which stage the moon will turn blood red in colour.

IMF suffer “major breach” in sophisticated cyberattack
It would appear that Google and Sony are not the only organisations to have fallen victim to a recent spate of successful hacking attacks. The New York Times are reporting that The International Monetary Fund (IMF) was recently hit by a large and sophisticated cyberattack, although very few details concerning this are yet known.

Cloud computing firm Marketo creates 125 jobs in Dublin
Cloud computing firm Marketo are to create 125 jobs over the next three years in Dublin, Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton will announce this morning. The IDA Ireland backed initiative will see the California-based company deliver business-to-business marketing automation software across Europe.

ESB and Topaz launch Ireland’s first electric vehicle fast-charge point
ESB ecars and Topaz have launched Ireland’s first electric vehicle fast-charge point in Coolshannagh, Co. Monaghan. This follows on from agreements between ESB ecars, Topaz, The Maxol Group, and Lidon last month that the roll-out of fast-charge points at service stations throughout the country would commence in May.

The finalists of the Bord Gáis sponsored Social Media Awards have been announced. Over one hundred Irish companies and organisations in seventeen categories will descend upon the Mansion House on Dublin’s Dawson Street this Thursday, May 26, for the inaugural awards event.

Tourism Ireland’s week long social media road trip
Tomorrow, Saturday, is the first day of a week long Tourism Ireland initiative where social media determines the road trip route taken by two avid British adventurers visiting Ireland. Their trip begins tomorrow in Belfast and ends seven days later in Cork, with the public deciding their journey southwards throughout the week.

Irish online yearly spend approaches €3 billion
Irish consumers spent €2.96 billion online in 2010 according to research published earlier this week by Visa Europe. This represents an increase of 39% from 2009 figures, where an estimated €2.13 billion worth of purchases took place.

‘Your Country, Your Call’ competition funding request withdrawn
Just over one year since the employment initiative ‘Your Country, Your Call’ closed for entries, the Irish Times today report that the competition’s request for funding has been withdrawn by its organisers. Contest initiator Dr. Martin McAleese, husband of President Mary McAleese, has withdrawn his request of €300,000 in government funding stating that it was no longer needed.
