Initiative to get Ireland trending on Twitter during Obama’s state visit #IRLday
To coincide with US President Barack Obama’s state visit to Ireland on May 23rd, an initiative that attempts to get Ireland trending on Twitter that day is well under way. The initiative, started by PocketNative, hopes that a high volume of tweets containing the hashtag ‘#IRLday’ will ensure that the topic trends on Twitter during the President’s visit and Ireland receives the attention of over 200 million other Twitter users.

NASA satellite image of gorse fires raging across the north and west of Ireland
NASA's MODIS Rapid Response, an emergency response system that provides near real-time satellite "thermal anomaly" imagery, has captured this image of gorse fires raging across parts of the north and west of Ireland. The image was taken yesterday afternoon as strong winds and prolonged recent dry spells have driven gorse, bog, and forest fires "out of control" in Donegal, Down, Galway, Mayo and parts of Fermanagh, Monaghan and Tyrone.

Deregulation of Electric Ireland could mean lower energy bills for struggling Irish households
The Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) yesterday announced the decision to deregulate Electric Ireland, the re-branded energy supply business of the ESB, which could potentially mean lower energy bills for struggling Irish households. From April 4 Electric Ireland residential electricity prices will no longer be regulated - something that business customers have experienced since October of last year.

Image of the International Space Station as it orbits sky over Ireland
With clear skies forecast for this week across much of Ireland an excellent opportunity presents itself for amateur astronomers to catch a glimpse of the International Space Station as it orbits earth and passes over Ireland. One such sighting opportunity occurred at 19:53 this evening, and although slightly unprepared, I managed to capture this light trail as the space station hurtled past.
