New Irish broadband task force to help deliver ubiquitous 30Mbps broadband
Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources Pat Rabbitte, along with colleague Fergus O’Dowd, convened a high level task force yesterday charged will formulating policies on how best to roll-out ubiquitous high speed broadband to all areas of Ireland.

International BBC News Android app launched
BBC Worldwide has today launched the BBC News Android app to audiences internationally. An iOS version of this free app has already proved very popular since it launched in April 2010, with over three million downloads outside of the UK alone.

Facebook growth slows for second consecutive month
While Facebook is still experiencing user growth, having reached 687 million monthly active users at the start of this month, this growth rate has been lower than normal for the second consecutive month, according to Inside Facebook.

IMF suffer “major breach” in sophisticated cyberattack
It would appear that Google and Sony are not the only organisations to have fallen victim to a recent spate of successful hacking attacks. The New York Times are reporting that The International Monetary Fund (IMF) was recently hit by a large and sophisticated cyberattack, although very few details concerning this are yet known.

How to disable Facebook facial recognition
Facebook has quietly rolled out its new Tag Suggestions feature to most countries over the past few days. Tag Suggestions uses facial recognition technology to auto-suggest names of Facebook friends to tag in photos, something which has alarmed many Facebook users and security firms. Luckily, however, this feature can be easily disabled.

NASA captures image of this morning’s massive solar flare
NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), a semi-autonomous spacecraft that almost continuously observes the Sun, has captured a high definition image of a massive solar flare that occurred this morning. Solar flares occur when stored magnetic energy suddenly erupts from the outermost layer of the Sun’s atmosphere, the corona.
